Founded in Manchester in 1889 by Frederick John Ratchford (left), we’ve been supplying top-quality materials for over a century.

Initially based in Manchester down Minshull Street, where the County Courts currently stand, we moved to Stockport to be away from the night raids during the second world war, and at the same time be closer to the hat & shoe industry in Stockport. Back then, F.J. Ratchford supplied materials for the booming shoe lining and hat industries. Our Head Office is based in Stockport, a hub for hat manufacturing in the late 19th century & the famous Hat Works Museum can still be visited today!

After Fredrick passed away, his wife Hannah (third top) took over, steering the company until her sons Edgar & Norman (senior) were ready to take the reins. Hannah’s dedication helped lay the foundation which we are so proud of today. During the 60’s/70’s hat wearing and British shoe manufacturing had gone into decline due to fashions & cheaper imports. Edgar & Norman (2nd picture above)  steered the company into book-binding and luxury packaging materials, which we have been promoting ever since & we never looked back!

Norman went on to marry Winnifred, and together they continued the Ratchford legacy, with family—and even Fudge, their soft guard dog—by their side (right).

Since then, the business has transitioned through three more generations of Ratchford’s, with the passion and expertise for the trade being passed through to the present day, ensuring we continue to lead and innovate the industry.
